成都高新区筹建于1988年，1991年获批成为全国首批国家级高新区，2006年被科技部确定为全国创建“世界一流高科技园区”试点园区之一，2015年经国务院批准成为西部首个国家自主创新示范区，是全国版权示范园区、全国科技和金融结合试点地区、国家知识产权示范园区、国家高新技术产业标准化示范区、全国知名品牌创建示范区、国家级出口电子信息产品质量安全示范区。
2016年，在科技部国家高新区评价中综合排名位居全国第三。在国家提出“一带一路”倡议、实施创新驱动发展战略，促进长江经济带和成渝经济区建设的背景下，成都高新区正紧紧围绕成都建设全面体现新发展理念的国家中心城市的总体目标，承担成都“东进南拓”使命，加快建设成都国家自主创新示范区和天府国际空港新城，全力打造万亿级国际创新创业中心。
