6 j/ h: y2 e& S" [Being able to flip or roll short balls is a necessary skill that is difficult for some players to learn. Often, the problem lies in trying too hard to hit a winner or a really hard shot, using too big of a stroke and not enough footwork.

) y+ b" d; W- f7 n& A! @' EInstead, try this three-step approach. First, get in close to the ball, down and low. Second, once you have moved in, give the ball a little flip or roll with a short stroke. Focus entirely on position, i.e. placing the ball deep to a corner or at your opponent's body, and not at all on speed. This should be a controlled, low shot, not an attempted winner. Third -- and very important -- move back out quickly to a ready position to attack your opponent's return of your flip.& o. B$ z/ l9 \
