Senior Mechanical Engineer

Be part of a new group being formed within the Shanghai-based operation of a US-based company that has been very successful in the China market during the past 5 years. The engineer’s core responsibilities include helping the company achieve manufacturing cost reduction through mechanical component design modifications and improving equipment component usability/function through analysis/investigation and design improvement. The engineer will perform design, development and testing on electro/mechanical components of industrial process equipment, and develop test / part evaluation equipment/tools for such components. The engineer will be expected to provide project leadership and communicate effectively within a matrix organizational structure (communicating with and receiving direction/support from both staff in the USA and a manager in China).

Key Duties & Responsibilities
•        Creates / modifies mechanical design drawings using Solidworks CAD software and creates / modifies Bills of Materials for designs.
•        Selects new mechanical components / equipment and helps qualify the suitability/interchangeability of substitute equipment components / equipment available from China suppliers.
•        Performs mechanical component/equipment problem investigation/analysis, provides technically-sound recommendations for solving mechanical problems and implements accepted solutions when required.
•        Provides leadership in the consistent application of design drawing standards and proper design drawing revision practices.
•        Assists with the development of component part qualification test procedures.
•        Conducts equipment / component part / subassembly testing and integration testing for functionality and limits.
•        Creates prototypes for beta testing and for customer demonstration.
•        Prepares reports of results and conclusions for management.
•        Assists with verifying the capabilities and resources of current and potential suppliers.
•        May collaborate with vendors on product specifications and component selection.
•        Researches new technology or development tools to determine level of usefulness in helping company satisfy customer and company goals.
Skills and Knowledge Needed
•        Solidworks CAD drawing and Product Data Management knowledge and proficiency.
•        Experience with thermal-fluids process equipment or high-temperature industrial equipment and experience in working with companies that supply parts / components for such equipment / processes.
•        Good knowledge of design principles and practices, and design evaluation techniques.
•        Ability to anticipate potential problems that could appear during implementation of design changes / new designs and able to proactively respond through implementation of problem prevention/reduction action.
•        Core knowledge of manufacturing practices and processes (including part machining and other material-processing methods) through significant working experience in industrial equipment manufacturing.
•        Good communication and presentation skills to properly communicate information of moderate complexity to peers and members of the management team (up through senior management level) and some external contacts, such as vendors.

Requirements
•        B.S. mechanical engineering required
•        10 + years related experience
